Samuel Earle & Nancy Campbell

Samuel Earle was born April 29, 1816, in Warren, Ohio, the sixth son and eleventh child of John and Mary (Heaton) Earl, and was raised in Howland Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. Nancy Campbell was born May 14, 1823, in Ohio, and she and Samuel were married November 17, 1844, in Lordstown, Ohio.

Samuel and Nancy first made their home in the Lordstown district, where Samuel farmed $1625 worth of land. Three children—Delilah, Ira, and Olive—were born to them in Lordstown. When Samuel’s father died in 1850, he and his brother Charles inherited the family farm, “containing about fifty acres…to be equally divided between” them.

In the early or mid-1850s, Samuel and Nancy moved to Carter Township, Spencer County, Indiana, where Samuel farmed $800 worth of farmland. Their youngest daughter, Mary, was born to them in Carter Township. In the early 1860s, the Earles moved to Gentry County, Missouri, where Samuel farmed in the Albany area, and where their daughter Delilah was married.

In 1869, wanderlust again afflicted the Earles, and they moved to Chase County, Kansas, where they built a log cabin and homesteaded eighty acres north of the town of Bazaar. Nancy died in Bazaar in 1876. After her death, their son, Ira, assumed management responsibilities for the family farm.

In the early 1880s, Ira moved with his family to Summit Township in Chautauqua County, near Sedan, Kansas. Samuel stayed in Bazaar for about a year after Ira’s departure, then he sold his farm to A. R. Palmer and moved in with Ira and his family. Samuel lived with Ira’s family until his death October 2, 1896.
