Mary Catherine Ellis & William Carl Blessing

Mary Catherine Ellis was born in June 1841 in Oldham County, Kentucky, the eldest child and only daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Ladd) Ellis. When she was about three or four years old, her family removed to Missouri, eventually settling in Athens Township of Gentry County.

William Carl Blessing was born in 1839 in Monroe County, Indiana, a son of Christopher and Elisabeth Blessing. When he was about three years old, his family removed to Missouri, eventually settling in Bethany Township of Harrison County.

Mary and William were married about 1861, and they made their home together in White Oak Township of Harrison County, close to both of their families—Mary’s uncle and aunt, Thomas and Mary Ladd, lived especially close. Their farm in 1870 was valued at $1000, and their personal estate was valued at $500. Ten children were born to them in White Oak Township, all but one of whom lived to adulthood.

William died an untimely death in 1891, after which Mary’s widowed father moved in to help her raise her children. By 1910, she had moved in with the family of her son, Leroy. She died in 1922 and was buried next to William in the White Oak Cemetery.

Roy William Monfore & Eula Moore

Roy William Monfore was born May 12, 1887, in Springfield, Dakota Territory, the second youngest child and son of Emerson John and Alice Ann (McNair) Monfore. While he was quite young, his family moved to Belmont Township, Warren County, Iowa, where his maternal grandparents, Robert and Nancy McNair, lived. They moved again in the late 1890s to Dallas Township, Harrison County, Missouri, before finally moving about 1905 to Jenks, Oklahoma, where Roy went to work as a laborer on oil pipelines. When his parents returned to northwest Missouri in late 1910 or early 1911, Roy stayed behind in Jenks.

Eula Moore was born May 20, 1889, in Tennessee, a daughter of William L. and Mary P. Moore, and came to Jenks before 1910, where she met Roy. Roy and Eula were married December 27, 1911, in Jenks, and two sons and a daughter were born to them, besides another child who died at birth. Roy supported his family working as a petroleum engineer for the P.P.L. Company in Tulsa, and probably other petroleum companies in the Tulsa area as well.

Eula died March 22, 1924, and was interred in the Rose Hill Memorial Park in Tulsa. After her death, their daughter, Doris, was sent for a time to live with Roy’s brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ethel Monfore, in Waverly, Kansas.

Bertha M. Redding was born July 1895 in Pottawatomie Township, Coffey County, Kansas, a daughter of Charles F. and Emma M. Redding, and was raised near Waverly. About 1920, she moved for a time to Tulsa to work as a servant for the James and Julia Woodford family, but she had moved home by 1925. She likely would have known Robert and Ethel Monfore, who probably introduced her to Roy, and the two were married about 1926.

Roy’s and Bertha’s marriage lasted about nineteen years, until Bertha’s death February 24, 1945. She was laid to rest in Tulsa’s Rose Hill Memorial Park. Roy survived her by nine and a half years, passing away August 20, 1954. He, too, was laid to rest in Rose Hill Memorial Park.

Robert Emerson Monfore & Ethel Satt Painter

Robert Emerson Monfore was born July 30, 1882, in Belmont Township, Warren County, Iowa, the fourth child and eldest son of Emerson John and Alice Ann (McNair) Monfore. When he was about three years old, his family removed to Springfield, Dakota Territory, where they stayed for a few years near his paternal grandparents, before returning to Iowa, near his maternal grandparents. When he was in his teens, his family moved to Dallas Township, Harrison County, Missouri, where he stayed until the early 1900s, when he removed to Waverly, Kansas.

Ethel Satt Painter was born October 4, 1886, in Waverly, a daughter of John Gervaise and Phebe L. (Jagger) Painter, and was raised there by them to adulthood. Her father was the town butcher.

Robert and Ethel were married October 5, 1904, at her parents’ home in Waverly. She “wore a very becoming costume of white,” and he wore “the conventional black.” Presbyterian minister Rev. Charles Whorrall performed the ceremony. “The rooms were nicely decorated with cosmos and evergreen, and a pretty evergreen horseshoe in a corner of the room helped to make the decorations most beautiful. After the ceremony the company and 65 guests were served a lap supper of cake and ice cream, while the Waverly concert band played a few serenade selections.”

During the early years of their marriage, Robert and Ethel lived with her parents in Waverly, where Robert soon established himself as the town barber, operating his own shop. Before the end of the decade, her father died and her mother came to live with them. Two sons were born to Robert and Ethel in Waverly—Robert in late 1905, and Gervaise in early 1910. Phebe Painter had moved out by 1915, but she had returned to live with them by 1920. In the mid-1920s, Robert’s niece, Doris Monfore, came to live with them after her mother’s death. Ethel’s niece, Agnes Wilson, also came to live with them about the same time.

In the late 1920s, Robert sold his barbershop in Waverly and moved his family, including his sons and mother-in-law, to Emporia, Kansas, where they purchased a home at 828 West Street valued at $4000 in 1930 and $3000 in 1940. He opened another barbershop in Emporia, and Ethel helped him out by working as his cashier. In 1930, his nephew, Bermie Stockton, also came to work with him, staying on for twelve years until he left to work for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. Robert also kept a parrot in his barbershop.

Robert passed away February 14, 1955, in Emporia, with Ethel following him nearly three years later on February 2, 1958. Both were laid to rest in Emporia.

Nettie Adelma Monfore & Andrew J. Frank

Nettie Adelma Monfore was born December 26, 1872, in Springfield, Dakota Territory, the eldest child and daughter of Emerson John and Alice Ann (McNair) Monfore. While she was quite young, she and her parents removed to Belmont Township, Warren County, Iowa, close to her maternal grandparents, Robert and Nancy McNair. When she was in her early teens, her family moved back to Springfield for a few years, but afterward returned to Iowa.

Andrew J. Frank was born May 7, 1871, in Liberty Township, Warren County, Iowa, the youngest son of Josiah and Bernetta Frank, and was raised on his parents’ farm in Liberty Township. He and Nettie were married February 17, 1891, in Liberty Township.

Nettie and Andy first made their home in Liberty Township, where their daughter, Maude, was born to them. In the late 1890s, Nettie’s parents moved to Dallas Township, Harrison County, Missouri, so she and Andy sold their farm and followed them, purchasing a farm nearby. Nettie’s sister and brother-in-law, Nannie and Purl Clodfelter, also followed them, settling in the nearby town of Martinsville.

In late 1900 or early 1901, Nettie and Andy sold their farm in Missouri and removed to Elm Creek Township, Morris County, Kansas, where their daughter, Blanche, was born to them. Nannie and Purl also followed them to Elm Creek Township, where Nettie’s and Nannie’s half-grandaunt and uncle, Mary Almirah (Monfore) and Henry V. Monroe, lived.

Sometime between 1905 and 1910, Nettie and Andy moved 25 miles to the southeast to Americus Township, Lyon County, Kansas. By 1910, they owned their farm free from mortgage. About this time, Andy’s widowed mother came to live with them, staying until her death shortly after 1910. They sold their farm in the late 1910s and retired to nearby Agnes City Township, where they rented their home. They returned to their farm in Americus Township in the early 1920s, but returned to Agnes City Township int he late 1920s, where Andy died December 10, 1929.

After Andy’s death, Nettie removed to the Lyon County seat of Emporia, where she took in the five orphaned children of her sister, Orpha Stockton, after Orpha had died and Orpha’s husband, Clair, had been committed to the Topeka State Hospital. However, she eventually returned to Agnes City Township. In 1940, she divided her time between living with a friend of hers named Anna Grimsley in the town of Bushong, near Agnes City Township, and living with her daughter, Maude Shoup, in Emporia.

Nettie remarried February 3, 1942, to John Edward Duncan, who had lost his first wife in 1937. John was born June 22, 1877, a son of William A. and Martha A. Duncan, and was raised by them on their farm in Agnes City Township. He married his first wife, Rosetta, about 1907, and they lived for about fifteen or twenty years in Lees Township, Logan County, Kansas, before returning to Agnes City Township. He survived Nettie by twenty years, passing away in March 1969, and was laid to rest next to Rosetta in the Elmwood Cemetery in Bushong, Kansas.

Nettie died February 25, 1949, in Emporia, and was laid to rest next to her first husband, Andy, in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Emerson John Monfore & Alice Ann McNair

Emerson John Monfore was born September 29, 1848, in Center Lisle, New York, the eldest son of Peter and Diana A. (Howland) Monfore. In 1865 and 1868, he moved with his family to Putnam County, Illinois, and Warren County, Iowa, respectively. In 1871, Peter Monfore sent Emerson and his brother, Elmer, to Bon Homme County in the Dakota Territory, where Emerson filed on homesteads both for his parents and for himself before returning home to Iowa.

Alice Ann McNair was born July 27, 1854, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Two years later, she was adopted by Robert and Nancy (McNeer) McNair. Her birth name and family are not known. Alice moved with her parents and brother, William, to Belmont Township, Warren County. She and Emerson were married in Warren County on February 29, 1872.

Emerson and Alice first made their home in Bon Homme County, near the town of Springfield, where their eldest daughter, Nettie was born. However, they soon sold their farm and moved back to Belmont Township, where the next three children were born. In 1885, Emerson and Alice returned for a while to Bon Homme County, where their daughter, Orpha, and son, Roy, were born. After Roy’s birth, the Monfores returned to Belmont Township, where their youngest son, Harry, died two days after birth.

Emerson converted to the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1884. Alice was apparently converted at a much younger age. In his later years, Emerson was active in the church, serving at different times as Sunday school superintendent and class leader. According to his obituary, he was fervent in spirit and eloquent in his testimony.

Emerson and Alice moved to Missouri in the late 1890s, first to a farm in Dallas Township, Harrison County, near the town of Martinsville, where their daughter, Orpha, would meet Clair Bernard Stockton. About 1905, Emerson and Alice moved to Jenks, Tulsa County, Oklahoma Territory, where they hosted Orpha and Clair’s wedding the next year.

Starting in 1910, Emerson’s health began declining, beginning with a pneumatic attack. Either late year or in early 1911, he and Alice removed to Stanberry, Missouri, with Orpha and Clair. For the last year of his life, Emerson was incapacitated, requiring his wife’s constant care. He passed away February 5, 1912, in Stanberry from humipluglia.

After Emerson’s death, Alice removed to Emporia, Kansas, to live with her daughter and son-in-law Nannie and Purl Clodfelter, and was living with them when the 1920 census was taken. She was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Nettie and A. J. Frank, in the town of Americus, near Emporia, when she passed away June 30, 1926, of apoplexy. She was laid to rest next to Emerson in the High Ridge Cemetery in Stanberry.
